Red Lentils Dahl
Ingredients
- 200 gr red split lentils
- 900 ml water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp oil
- 2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 small onion, chopped finely
- 1 garlic clove, chopped finely
- 2 tomatoes, chopped in small cubes
- 1 tsp chopped ginger (or ginger powder)
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 2 tsp garam masala
- coriander leaves / parsley
Procedure:
- Wash the lentils under fresh water, very very well, to get rid of all the coating. Put them in pan with water and salt, bring to boil, remove the froth, reduce the heat, put the lid on top and let sim for about 10 minutes.
- In another pan, heat the oil, add the cumin seeds and the bay leaf and let fry for few minutes. Add onion and garlic and fry until they become brownish.
- Reduce the heat and add the chopped tomatoes, ginger and turmeric. Let everything cook together for about 10 minutes on a low heat, until it becomes a thick masala paste.
- When it’s ready, add the lentils together with the cooking wate. The result should be like a thick and creamy soup so if it gets too liquid, leave out a bit of the boiling water.
- Season with salt, add the garam masala and garnish with coriander leaves or parsley
